Deep Time

Coming October 2026

Harvey and Em have just arrived in an unfamiliar city in the American inland northwest, with their first child on the way. Soon, however, a series of strange encounters with unsettling neighbors, violent young police cadets, and smiling apocalyptic preachers suggest that something darker is taking place in in this ruined American landscape, where the news reports that the smoke is too thick to breathe, and the construction crews along the highway keep finding ancient bones.

Then the visitors arrive: first, the frightening specter of Harvey’s father; next, the creature, who turns all it touches to ash and seems to mourn a landscape already dead. But are the ghosts they see real or is Harvey beginning to succumb to his family’s tragic history of mental illness? And is there really some white supremacist conspiracy meeting in their midst, or have America’s anxieties made them paranoid? Why are the only animals they see dead ones? And what’s out there in the woods in the shape of a man, but not quite? Is their love and hope enough to guarantee a future for their child in a haunted world? Soon, they find themselves drawn toward a violent climax, in which they will discover whether their bond is powerful enough to survive their own personal hauntings, the sickness poisoning America’s communities, and the terrifying cosmic forces of history and nature, which, when you think about it, win every time.

About Me

I am an educator and writer living in Providence, Rhode Island. I teach American Studies and literature at both the College and High School level, and I’ve published scholarship about American literature, especially American literary horror, in the United States and internationally. Some of the authors I’ve written about include Herman Melville, Charles Chesnutt, and H.P. Lovecraft.

My novel, Deep Time, is the labor of many years. If you don’t find me writing, you’ll find me teaching. Running if I can find the time.

I owe everything to my partner, my child, my dog, and Emily Dickinson.
